One of the things I love about, well, love is how universal it is and how the very concept transcends all languages, generations and cultures. For that reason, anytime I am asked whether or not I'm comfortable photographing a wedding in a language other than English, my answer is always "Yes."
Because even if I don't know, with 100 percent certainty, what's being said and what's going on, all I have to do is look at the faces of the brides and grooms getting married to know how much the day means to them and what I have to photograph.
Yesica and Edwin's Spanish-language wedding ceremony back in August at Allendale Country Club in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts was just like this and though the quiet, reserved couple's wedding day may have lacked the showy, over-the-top wedding moments I've become accustomed to, it was an intimate affair that was truly heartwarming to see.
This wedding day wasn't about being the center of attention. It wasn't about showing off or making a big deal out of saying "I do." It was about two people who fell in love and wanted to commit to each other for the rest of their lives and that's a message you can always understand with ... or without words.
My coverage of Yesica and Edwin's wedding day began about an hour before their ceremony began and I knew right away what kind of day we were in for as I headed to bridal prep at their venue and saw the bride was already beaming and super excited about this day.
Yesica looked absolutely breathtaking on her wedding day and whether it was the beautiful hair piece she had affixed at the top of her head, her stunning gown or her awesome smile, I knew she was going to be a bride that turned heads when she walked down the aisle.
Edwin wasn't much different and, together, the two were positively radiant as the minutes to their ceremony ticked away.
One of my favorite parts of Yesica and Edwin's wedding day was just how understated everything was. The pair were both fairly reserved and quiet as their finished getting ready for their ceremony but all I needed to see was the way Yesica broke down in tears when I asked her to close her eyes on reflect on this important day of her life to see just how much it all meant to her.
Yesica and Edwin chose to get married at Allendale Country Club and their choice was rewarded with an absolutely gorgeous summer afternoon that was perfect for a wedding.
And though he played his emotions close to the vest, I could tell how happy Edwin was by the way he looked down the aisle as his stunning bride arrived holding her father's arm.
Yesica and Edwin's ceremony was fairly short but not without its memorable moments.
While I couldn't quite understand what was being said, I could see the emotion in the bride and groom's eyes and that spoke volumes.
Apart from the traditional, romantic moments that are universal in every wedding, I couldn't help but laugh as Yesica and Edwin's son got restless and decided their wedding ceremony was a great time to hide in his mom's veil and/or do pull ups on his parent's connected arms.
It really was adorable and hammered home a central theme to this day: How important family was to this bride and groom.
After sealing their marriage with a kiss, Yesica and Edwin were ready for their formal photos and while I loved the shots we got during this time of day, it would be their sunset sets later in the evening that really captured my heart.
Regardless, one of my favorite shots of this entire wedding happened during their bride and groom formal portraits as we were able to maneuver Yesica's veil around for some fun poses that, I admit, felt a lot more ridiculous than they looked.
Still, when you have a couple this beautiful, you can't help but try some different angles and I'm glad as I did as these photos were a lot of fun to experiment with.
Following their bride and groom formals, Yesica and Edwin headed to the end of their cocktail hour while I disappeared inside their reception venue to grab some of the detail shots inside.
I loved what these two did for their decorations ... and not just because they made a lot of it by hand and with the help of Yesica's sister (who put together the flowers and cake.)
All of the decorations on display worked well with the color scheme of this wedding and made the already beautiful room pop even more.
As Yesica and Edwin readied for their reception, deep down I knew the night was just getting started.
I've done a few Spanish weddings in my time and they ALWAYS deliver when it comes to the party part of the evening and Yesica and Edwin were no exception.
Right from the moment the pair walked in, I could tell how excited they were and it was only highlighted by their touching first dance, set to "Te Voy Amar” by Axel.
I loved this first dance as Yesica and Edwin didn't do much but hold each other and sway to the music and that was still enough to convey exactly how they felt in that moment.
Following their first dance, Yesica and Edwin had a couple of sweet moments together. The first was a dance with Yesica and her son that even made the otherwise cool groom tear up.
Then, it was time for the bride to cry as her father surprised her with a traditional father-daughter dance that she wasn't expecting.
Add in a beautiful toast by the maid of honor, some really fun sunset photos, a simple but beautiful cake cutting and a special twist on the traditional bouquet toss (Each single lady was given a key to unlock a box containing the bouquet) and Yesica and Edwin had knocked all the "big moments" of their wedding reception out perfectly.
But, as much fun as everything to do with their ceremony and the first half of their reception was, I knew the night wouldn't be complete without some great dancing and Yesica and Edwin showed right from the first song of the open dance floor portion of the evening that they knew it, too.
I loved seeing these two together on the dance floor and they really set the tone for the rest of the evening as their friends and family members all got up and rocked out to the music.
And, I won't lie, by the time I left I had at least five or six new Latin songs to add to my Spotify playlist.
As my time with Yesica and Edwin came to an end, I couldn't help but think how much fun these two were and how special their wedding day was.
While it was a lot more subdued and relaxed than the weddings I'm used to, there was a charm in how laidback this bride and groom were.
As an older couple, Yesica and Edwin have a quiet maturity about them and their day was a reflection of that. More importantly, though, it was a day that stressed the most important thing in their life: Family. And, for that, I'm grateful I got to sit back and document it all as I know this is a day that meant the world to this bride and groom and will continue to mean just as much in 20 and 30 years as it did on the day in question.
So congratulations Yesica and Edwin on a beautiful wedding day and best of luck in your life together as husband and wife. :)
