Alyson & Nick

Photographers can be creatures of habit. The idea is a simple one: If you do something enough and repeat it enough, you become pretty good at it. So you can imagine how tough it is when your rhythm is thrown off a bit and you encounter a couple who completely upend your normal procedures and routines.
But I live for these unconventional moments and working with Alyson and Nick has been exactly that.
Alyson and Nick are getting married in September of next year. Well, officially married anyway. Sort of.
See, I've already photographed Alyson and Nick's legally-binding marriage as the two were wed in a small and private elopement back in September of this year. But their "full" wedding day won't be until 2019.
Keeping track? Yeah, I admit. It's been tough for me too. Thankfully, Alyson and Nick are an amazingly fun couple who have been a blast to work with so when they told me they wanted me to do their engagement session AFTER their elopement and BEFORE their full wedding next fall, I shrugged my shoulders and said "Let's do it."
I'm glad I did.
Alyson and Nick chose to have their engagement session take place in a field literally a stone's throw away from their house. They did this so they could comfortably include their dogs in some of the photos and I'm glad they did as these two pups, while incredibly fierce looking, were sweet behind the camera.
And the same goes for the bride and groom as well. Alyson and Nick are naturals when it comes to posing and though they don't like doing anything too "stuffy," it's not too tough to get their natural personalities to come through the photos.
Alyson and Nick has simple requests for their engagement session and, really, we could have called it a day after 15 minutes but the two agreed to indulge me a little bit and we took a short drive to another local park near their home for one more round of photos.
And I'm glad they did as Alyson changed outfits and having multiple looks helped round out the session perfectly.
Plus, as a bonus, the spot we chose ended up overlooking the water nicely and provided a great mid-fall backdrop for some of my favorite photos of the day.
As Alyson, Nick and I called it a day for their engagement session, I couldn't help but think about how smoothly everything went. This session was about half as long as most of my normal ones and any and all of the usual awkwardness that accompanies engagement sessions for my clients was gone.
This bride and groom have posing down pat and are super comfortable in front of the camera with me now.
I can only imagine how easygoing their wedding will be come September and, given the fact that they're already married and have already lived through the pressure and nerves of a wedding day, I assume it's going to be nothing more than one giant party when next fall rolls around.
And I'd have it no other way.
So congratulations Alyson and Nick. I can't wait to document your NEXT special day come 2019! See you soon!
