Danae & Nonso

As a romantic at heart, I am endlessly fascinated with the way people get married. For a marquee life event that— on paper at least — is pretty simple at its core, there are so many ways to do it and so many styles and traditions you can draw from when it's your turn to walk down the aisle.

That's why I love photographing weddings from different cultures than my own. I adore seeing the way people put their own spin on their big day and how similar, or different, it is than what I'm used to.

Weddings like Danae and Nonso's back in March at the Barn at Gibbet Hill in Groton, Massachusetts show why as the two said "I do" on a blistering cold late winter day but had one of the warmest, most heartfelt weddings I've shot in some time.

And while I may not be incredibly familiar with the many Nigerian customs they incorporated into their day, that didn't matter because love, joy and fun are ideas that are universal regardless of where they come from.

My time with Danae and Nonso began shortly before they walked down the aisle on a sunny but absolutely frigid March afternoon.

I'm always weary when a bride and groom ask me to start my coverage with the beginning of their ceremony but Danae and Nonso decided during our pre-wedding consultations that they didn't care too much about anything related to the prep portion of their day and, looking back on that decision, it was the right call when you see how their night ended.

My assistant and I arrived to the Barn at Gibbet Hill about a half hour before Nonso and Danae would walk down the aisle to set up my lights and I got the sense we were in for a great time when I saw how lively the guests were and how beautiful the setting for this ceremony was.

And the moment I saw how excited Nonso looked walking down the aisle, I knew this would be one of my favorite ceremonies of the year and I was right.

One of the things that made Danae and Nonso's ceremony so special was the way they complement each other. Not only were these two so clearly locked in in this moment but their ceremony was all about their special relationship and the way they make each other feel loved.

I adored that both noted this in their vows, with Nonso highlighting some of the moments where he knew he wanted to marry Danae and thanking her for putting up with his bad jokes while Danae told her soon-to-be husband that she felt like she could be herself and be weird and that was important to her.

Those little touches really enhanced what this moment meant to these two and by the time they walked down the aisle as husband and wife, you could tell they had already committed to spend the rest of their lives together long before that day in the barn and I loved that for them.

Following their ceremony, Danae and Nonso headed to their family and wedding party formals. Because it was so cold outside, we did the bulk of their formal photos inside and I'm glad we did as we flew through them pretty easily.

When we got toward the end, however, I knew I had to take them outside to really capture the beauty of the Barn at Gibbet Farm and promised to make it as quick as possible. Danae and Nonso's wedding party humored me enough for a few photos but I could tell they were relieved when I cut them loose to go warm up.

Danae and Nonso weren't as lucky, though. When we headed outside and I saw how beautiful the sky looked, I told them we simply had to take full advantage of how stunning this venue looked.

To their credit, the newlyweds did their best to not look incredibly cold and I think we pulled it off pretty well ... at least until the final photo where I let them tell me exactly how they were feeling in that moment.

But, hey, it was worth it for the photos I think. :)

With their formal photos finished, I released Danae and Nonso to get ready for their reception and headed inside to warm myself up as well. But, first, I had to make sure to take some time to capture all of the decor and details they had one display.

I really loved how Danae and Nonso chose to decorate the Barn at Gibbet Hill. With a gold and greenish hue to their decor, things like their wedding cake and seating chart really blended in nicely with the rustic vibes of their reception venue.

I had high hopes for Danae and Nonso's wedding reception for a variety of reasons but chief among them was the overall vibe of their friends and family members throughout the day leading up to their introductions.

I don't know if it's because of the long winter we had or if they were just excited for the couple itself but that room felt like they were READY for a party and Danae and Nonso really set the tone early by coming out to "Die with a Smile" by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars and transitioning into "Made for Me" by Muni Long for their first dance.

And what a first dance it was.

One thing I really loved about Danae and Nonso's friends really just GOT them. I see a lot of weddings where you're left wondering how close people really are to the bride and groom as the speeches and moments don't feel like ones the couple would have chosen for themselves but Nonso's best man and Danae's maid of honor absolutely crushed the tone of the night with their speeches and really made you feel like you've known this couple forever.

I especially loved how clear it was that these newlyweds are the most caring people to those in their circle.

Danae and Nonso didn't overdo it with the formalities during their reception, choosing to keep it to the toasts, a Kola Nut ceremony led by Nonso's father and a cake cutting. Otherwise, the vibes on this night were as chill as the weather outside.

As I said above, I had high expectations for Danae and Nonso's reception and those expectations only grew when I felt the excitement in the room build as Nonso, his mom and his groomsmen all came out in new outfits for the official mother-son dance to kick off the back half of the reception itinerary.

After a very cute interaction with Nonso and his mom, it was time for Danae to unveil her second outfit as part of the traditional wine carrying ceremony for a Nigerian wedding and immediately upon walking in the room, we went from standard reception fare to big ol' party and I couldn't have asked for a better way to start this night off right.

I have a rule for what makes or breaks a successful wedding for me: Is it one I would have wanted to attend as a guest? By that metric, I don't know if many weddings I shoot this year will top Danae and Nonso's for the dance floor alone as they had one of the most fun receptions I've had in a long time.
Of course, I may be bias. Any wedding with that much Bad Bunny and reggaeton on the playlist is sure to make me thrilled.

But, seriously. This party was NON STOP and it didn't matter if you were young or old, if you were on the dance floor, you were leaving it all on that dance floor.

You know you're at a banger of a party when the bride and groom have to duck off the dance floor to catch their breath and Danae and Nonso did that as my time slowly came to an end with them.

But, in the biggest compliment I can pay to this crowd, that didn't slow things down one iota. This group of people came to throw it back and throw it back they did.

As I packed up my gear and got ready to say my goodbyes to Danae and Nonso, I was a red faced, hot, sweaty mess and I was absolutely loving it.

There are few better feelings in the world than knowing you put in that WORK at a wedding and Danae and Nonso's dance floor really took it out of me in the best way possible. But, of course, that makes sense. Their friends and family members were there to celebrate an amazing couple and an amazing relationship and the entire afternoon was just that: a celebration.

So, thank you Danae and Nonso for letting me play a small role in documenting this special day for you to appreciate forever. I wish you all the best as you embark on this new journey together as husband and wife and hope every day is as happy and joyful as the day you said "I do."
