Blog  The Story Behind The Stories
Saphire Estate Wedding Photos

Have you ever had a moment where something funny or unpredictable happened and you thought to yourself "Man, I'm going to remember that for a long time?" As a Rhode Island wedding photographer, I have more of these moments every year than I could even imagine trying to count.

Weddings are the ultimate thrill ride for me. A once-in-a-lifetime day full of special moments and memories that I know my brides and grooms will cherish for a lifetime. With that typically comes a timeline full of things to do, a unrelenting stress for everything to go perfect and, eventually, enough alcohol to wipe away any inhibitions if things don't go exactly how you envisioned them.

Back in the fall of 2014, when I was just starting my career as a wedding photographer, I thought it would be a good idea to do what everyone on the internet was doing back then: write a blog. The problem, I would discover, was I had nothing of note to say. So I did what any good photographer does: Let the photos speak for themselves.

It took me a while to find my voice as a blog writer but I'm so glad I did as I genuinely believe my blog writing has become a key part of documenting a wedding for my couples. These are the inside stories behind the stories of the wedding days that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Whether you're planning your own wedding or you just like looking at cool wedding photos and finding out more behind them, I hope you genuinely enjoy these articles. Going forward I will continue writing separate blog entries for each wedding and engagement session I shot and, soon, I will start adding some exciting wedding-related articles I hope help brides and grooms in their quest to plan the perfect day.

For now, though, enjoy a stroll back through my favorite stories and images of recent assignments and, as always, thanks for reading.

Wedding days are among some of the longest, and busiest, days of your life. For Ann and Andrew, that was even more true than most couples as the pair had not one but TWO wedding ceremonies on the day they became husband and wife.

But, although their wedding day consisting of a traditional Vietnamese ceremony and an American wedding ceremony and reception may have been long, I know they wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Why? Because it was perfect from start to finish. Want to know why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

As much as it hurt to see several of my brides and grooms postpone their 2020 weddings to 2021, one consolation I've been able to take is that, so far, it doesn't seem as if these grand celebrations one year later are any less special.

Karen and Steve's certainly wasn't. The pair had their "official" wedding back in July and, though they'd eloped in a small ceremony over a year earlier, their wedding at the Barn at Wight Farm in Sturbridge, Massachusetts was still perfectly them. How so? Click here and see it for yourself.

It's rare that one moment will sum an entire wedding day but it's even rarer that it might sum up an entire wedding season.

And even though it's still spring, I think my favorite moment of the 2021 wedding season may have come during Allegra & Nick's May wedding reception that I photographed for George Street Photography.

After a beautiful first dance, Allegra and Nick let loose on the dance floor for one of the most fun dance medleys I've ever seen at a wedding. Want to see why I loved it so much? Click here to see it for yourself.

One of the most creatively freeing things you can do as a wedding photographer is second shoot for another photographer and, even though I hadn't done so for three years, when the opportunity presented itself to work with Pretty Nerdy Photography on Becca and Ryan's May wedding at the Towers in Narragansett, I just had to say 'yes.'

I'm so glad I did as Becca and Ryan's wedding was a ton of fun to shoot and a rewarding experience creatively. Want to see why? Click here to see some of my favorite photos from their big day.

There was a moment at the tail end of Catherine and Sean's engagement session that told me exactly why I adored this bride and groom.

Having just finished up, I asked the two if they wanted to drive around the park we were at to find a better spot for sunset shots. They said yes and though we weren't successful, that flexibility told me all I needed to know about their wedding later this year.

I loved Catherine and Sean's engagement session and if you want to see why, check it out for yourself by clicking here.

I always know I'm in for a great wedding day when I sit down with a couple for the first time and they have a very clear vision of what they want their wedding to be.

Mark and Julie were one of those couples and, partly because of the coronavirus pandemic but partly because of their own personalities, the first thing they told me was their wedding day would be a simple, short and intimate event.

But that doesn't mean it was any less special. In fact, I can't think of a way they could've made their wedding more perfect. Why? Check it out for yourself.

There aren't a lot of bright sides to be found through the coronavirus pandemic but one I'm particularly thankful for is the way in which it allowed couples to really figure out what the most important aspects of their wedding day would be.

For Paige and Ryan, that meant scrapping plans to host their event in a venue that may or may not have been under severe pandemic-related restrictions and opting, instead, for a backyard wedding ceremony and reception that featured a full pool party and dunk tank and was so right for them. Lake Pearl Wedding Photos

I love a couple that makes each other laugh and few couples in all my years photographing weddings ever spent more time giggling on their wedding day than Lindsey and Andrew.

Lindsey and Andrew were married at Saint Mary's Parish in Franklin, Massachusetts and what they lacked in silliness for their traditional ceremony they more than made up for with a wild reception at Lake Pearl in Wrentham, Massachusetts. In fact, their reception was so much fun that I had to stay until the end even though I wasn't even booked to. See why by clicking here.

It's always a bit concerning when you don't get to shoot an engagement session for a couple who have booked you to photograph their wedding until just a few weeks before the big day. What if you don't click? What if they hate the photos? What if they had a negative experience?

Thankfully, in my experience, some of the best couples are the ones you get to work with for the first time right before their big day and Ann and Andrew were no exception. Want to see why? Check out their June engagement session for yourself here.

If there's one thing all of my 2021 couples have in common, particularly those getting married in the spring and summer, it's that planning a wedding was definitely touch and go for a while.

It's hard to fully know what your big day is going to look like when you're in the midst of a global pandemic  but, for Evan and Alex, as long as they were husband and wife, their wedding day was going to be a success. And when the rules changed  and let them have the wedding of their dreams? Well, it was worth all the stress. See why for yourself by clicking here.

Each year, by the time spring rolls around, I'm counting down the days until the start of a new wedding season. Despite having 11 years experience as a wedding photographer I'm still as excited for a bride and groom's big day as I was on my first assignment.

Even so, I don't know if I've ever looked more forward to a wedding season than 2021. And I can't say I've ever been more eager for a "first wedding of a year" than I was for Stephanie and Stephen's big day in Charleston, South Carolina back in April. Want to see why?      As tough as 2020 has been, by far the hardest challenge as a wedding photographer is finding a way to stay positive. But that's twice as hard when you're a bride and groom set to get married and the coronavirus pandemic forces you to postpone your wedding.

In the case of Jillian and Kevin, staying positive meant "taking back" the wedding day they lost with a special engagement-style photo session.

The result? One of my favorite sessions of 2020 and the absolute perfect way for me to close the year out.

How do you stay positive when it seems like everything is going off the rails? That's a question I'm sure many of us have asked this year but, for Victoria and Keith, it's one that defined their wedding day.

Not only were this bride and groom forced to cancel plans for a beautiful wedding reception thanks to a global pandemic but even the day of their ceremony was beset by never-ending rain and horrid weather.

Yet, this couple not only stayed positive but they had an amazing wedding day DESPITE the obstacles. Want to see how? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

Granite Rose Wedding Photos

The year 2020 has been a trying one was many brides and grooms but, at the end of the day, I've found the most important thing a couple can do when planning a wedding is not to lose sight of the ultimate goal: Getting married to the person you love.

Michael and Christina kept that goal in mind as they planned their late November wedding day and though it may have been smaller than they initially thought, it was the absolute perfect day for so many reasons. Want to see why? See for yourself by clicking here.

Borderland State Park Engagement Photos

Borderland State Park, North Easton, Mass.

Date: October 17th, 2020

I'm a big believer that the work you put into a photo session will directly correspond with the work you get back. Perhaps that's why when Chelsea, Brandon and I stood inside Borderland State Park in North Easton, Massachusetts on a beautiful October afternoon, I was willing to walk just about anywhere.

No matter how long it took.
What resulted was a near marathon engagement session that went nearly three hours and was, without a doubt, one of my favorite shoots of the entire year. Want to see why? Check it out for yourself here.

Blissful Meadows Wedding Photos

I love a couple that can deal with any curve ball you throw at them and the minute I met Ashley & Justin, I knew they were one of them. And, thank goodness because they needed it on their wedding day.

Whether it was moving their ceremony indoors at the last minute, being limited to one small portion of a barn for family formals or wet weather for their bride and groom portraits, Ashley and Justin never let the weather get them down and it paid off with one of my favorite weddings of the year.      I've always said that an engagement session is the absolute perfect way to get to know a bride and groom and, if nothing else, I learned one thing working with Alex and Evan back in October: They know how to roll with the punches.

Despite a cold and rainy afternoon, Alex and Evan decided to go through with their engagement session and I'm so glad they did as, gloomy weather or no gloomy weather, it was a beautiful session showcasing a beautiful relationship. If you'd like to see why I enjoyed this session so much, check it out here.

One of the toughest parts about shooting an engagement session is getting to know your couple for the first time and seeing what works and doesn't work for their unique relationship and body language.

It's not often you find yourself in a situation I was in during Marisa and Larry's engagement session back in October. See, I'd already shot their wedding so we were already well aware of what to do and not do pose wise.

If that sounds odd to you, it's because it was uniquely weird to be as well but, thankfully, it worked beautiful and if you'd like to see why, check it out here.

It's hard to me to describe my perfect client as, by and large, I've found everyone I work with has their own unique story and it's a story I want to tell. If I had to narrow it down. to a list of characteristics I look for, however, Jaclyn and Corey have them all in spades.

Jaclyn and Corey are two of the most down-to-Earth people I've worked with in quite some time and their October engagement session at Goddard Park was easily one of the most times I've had with a camera in years. Want to see why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

Brewster Gardens Wedding Photos

If there's one thing that 2020 has taught me, it's that it's not the size of the wedding that matters, it's the love a couple shares with their closest friends and family.

Nowhere was that truer than when I photographed Katie and Merrill's October wedding.
Katie and Merrill had a simple wedding day with very few bells and whistles and, honestly, I'm SO GLAD they did. If you want to see why this was one of my favorite shoots of the year, despite not having met the bride and groom until an hour before they said "I do," check out the photos by clicking here.

One of the hardest things to do as an engagement portrait photographer is finding a way to bring a couple's unique energy and personality out in their photos.

Often, an engagement session is the first time you're working with a bride and groom and, most of the time, they're not entirely comfortable in front of the camera.

Luckily, I knew I was in for a treat with Christine and Brandon from the very start of their October session at Roger Williams Park in Providence and if you'd like to see why, check out their photos by clicking here.

I'm a photographer who doesn't mind stepping outside of his comfort zone so when I have a bride and groom that have an idea for their session, chances are I'm going to go for it big time.

For Ashley and Justin, that meant finding a way to give a slightly Halloween/fall theme to their engagement session earlier this month.

Since fall is my favorite time of year, I just had to say yes and if you'd like to see why I left the shoot beyond excited for their wedding just two weeks later, check out their photos for yourself by clicking here.

Squantum Association Wedding Photos

To me, one of the weirdest aspects of the 2020 wedding season, which has severely been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, is this idea that it's impossible to have a proper wedding without 150 guests and a giant dance floor.

Many of my clients choose to have intimate affairs regardless of pandemic-related restrictions and Gina and Philip are proof as to why that works quite well as they wanted a small wedding long before it was cool.
To see why that fit their wedding perfectly, check out the photos for yourself by clicking here.

You can tell an awful lot about a bride and groom by the special events they plan on their wedding day and, in the case of Jonathan & Gina, their September wedding day in Spencer, Massachusetts was centered on three things: Their relationship, their dog and their family.

Throughout an incredibly fun day and evening, Jonathan and Gina paid tribute to those closest to them and it made for one of the most fun weddings I've seen all year. Want to see why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

As much as weddings are known for the big moments like the first kiss, first dance and cake cutting, to me, it's the little moments that really make the day.

And this was evident all day and night long as Alena and Gabriel said "I do" back in September.

Getting married in a small celebration at a private residence in Franklin, Connecticut, Alena and Gabe's wedding day was defined by a lot of emotional moments that came and went in a blink of an eye.      If there's one thing that bums me out more than any other this year, it's the sheer number of brides and grooms who have been forced to postpone wedding days they've planned for years. I think that's why I take such pride when we can find a way for them to "take back their day."

In Lauren and Katelyn's case, that mean an unexpected engagement session on the day they were meant to say "I do" and if you'd like to see why that fit these brides so well, check out their photos for yourself by clicking here.
