THE STORY BEHIND THE STORIES
- YET ANOTHER PHOTOGRAPHY BLOG -
Have you ever had a moment where something funny or unpredictable happened and you thought to yourself "Man, I'm going to remember that for a long time?" As a Rhode Island wedding photographer, I have more of these moments every year than I could even imagine trying to count.
Weddings are the ultimate thrill ride for me. A once-in-a-lifetime day full of special moments and memories that I know my brides and grooms will cherish for a lifetime. With that typically comes a timeline full of things to do, a unrelenting stress for everything to go perfect and, eventually, enough alcohol to wipe away any inhibitions if things don't go exactly how you envisioned them.
Back in the fall of 2014, when I was just starting my career as a wedding photographer, I thought it would be a good idea to do what everyone on the internet was doing back then: write a blog. The problem, I would discover, was I had nothing of note to say. So I did what any good photographer does: Let the photos speak for themselves.
It took me a while to find my voice as a blog writer but I'm so glad I did as I genuinely believe my blog writing has become a key part of documenting a wedding for my couples. These are the inside stories behind the stories of the wedding days that I will remember for the rest of my life.
Whether you're planning your own wedding or you just like looking at cool wedding photos and finding out more behind them, I hope you genuinely enjoy these articles. Going forward I will continue writing separate blog entries for each wedding and engagement session I shot and, soon, I will start adding some exciting wedding-related articles I hope help brides and grooms in their quest to plan the perfect day.
For now, though, enjoy a stroll back through my favorite stories and images of recent assignments and, as always, thanks for reading.

I'm always fascinated by the stories a bride and groom tell me about how they met. While it's true a lot of my couple meet online now, every now and again I get a story like Tara and Marcus' where the couple dated when they were young, drifted apart and reconnected.
To me, that type of love story just feels like fate played a role and that's fitting because on the day Tara and Marcus said "I do," some force of nature was certainly on their side. What do I mean? Find out for yourself by clicking here.

Do you want to know the sign of a truly amazing wedding reception? It's easy. The venue coordinator has to tell you it's time to leave.
For Hannah and Houston, there was simply no other way their guests would have known it was time to stop the party on the night of their November nuptials.
In what was one of the most fun weddings I shot in 2022, Hannah and Houston said "I do" and then proceeded to rock the night away so fierce, I'm still thinking about it months later. Why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

Wedding days can be about so many people that, sadly, sometimes a bride and groom forget to take a minute for themselves on their special day to appreciate where they are and what they're doing.
That's why I was so thrilled for Jessica and Jonathan when, during their November nuptials at Lake Pearl, they took time at the end of their formal photos for a private vow ceremony with no one else around.
Well, no one except me. And I'm glad I was there because it was the highlight of an absolutely amazing day. Why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

It's always a risk when a bride and groom plan to get married on a holiday but I feel like it's even riskier when that special day is Halloween.
After all, you're asking a LOT of your guests to forgo parties or Trick or Treating to spend a day watching your wedding so it has to deliver, right?
In Nicole and Cameron's case, their Halloween wedding at the Red Lion Inn not only proved to be well worth giving up Halloween for. Dare I say, it was better than Halloween. Why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

There are a lot of things that your wedding day is SUPPOSED to be but if you ask me, the thing it should be more than anything else is fun. After all, why get married if you're not going to enjoy it?
And for Benjamin and Jessica, who said "I do" back in October, I had no doubt they were having fun from the start of their wedding day until the end. And everything else was just a bonus.
Benjamin and Jessica had one of my favorite and more fun weddings of the entire 2022 season. Why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

It's so tempting on your wedding day to want to have full control of every moment but, sometimes, you have to know when things are out of your control.
That was the theme for Diana and Tyler's October wedding at Five Bridge Inn as on again/off again showers made planning for photos near impossible.
Like all good couples, though, Diana and Tyler shrugged their shoulders and figured things would work out. And you know what? That positive attitude was rewarded. How? Well, click here to see how there was no way a little rain was going to ruin this beautiful day.

When you're a wedding photographer in New England and it's October, the last thing you want to do is pick up more work. Sometimes, though, it might not be what you want to do, it's what you NEED to do.
And that's why I try never to turn down a second shooting assignment if I'm available. Because, every once in a while, I get to work with an awesome couple like Kayla and Michael, whose fall wedding day was the exact creative spark I needed at one of my most burnt out moments of the year. I feel fortunate any time a bride and groom trusts me enough to ask me to photograph their wedding day. But, sometimes, a day is so beautiful and a couple is so fun that I can't help but feel a little EXTRA lucky I get to do what I do for a living. Jessica and Phillip's October wedding is the perfect example of what I mean.
Without question, these two said "I do" on the most beautiful day for a wedding in 2022 and their picture perfect nuptials not only lived up, but actually surpassed the beauty of nature itself. Why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

I love a couple that's not afraid to show emotions. If you can't care deeply about your wedding day, what CAN you care about?
I think that's why I knew Robert and Amanda's wedding was going to be so much fun to shoot. Because not only did the bride expect the groom to cry. The groom expected himself to cry. Both were right.
Rob and Amanda's October wedding was one full of just about every emotion there is and I'm glad I got to document it. Why? See for yourself by clicking here.

One of the things I love the most about wedding photography is you never know what is going to happen and what moments will become THE moments of a bride and groom's big day.
Like, for example, when Michael and Sheila's wedding ceremony was interrupted by a medical emergency. In a moment that could have ruined most wedding days, Sheila and Michael showed their true relationship by laughing and joking about it and, honestly, by the end we all were to. Want to see why? Anytime I second shoot a wedding, there's a bit of nervousness as I meet the couple for the first time. Will I like them? Will they like me? Will this be a fun day?
Until I walk into these shoots, I literally have no idea what to expect and that's why weddings like Lauren and Arianna's — where I felt right at home, right away — are so much fun to photograph.
Lauren and Arianna had a fantastic fall wedding day and even though I just met them that day, it felt like I knew them forever and you can see why for yourself by clicking here.

There are few things in this world that get me more excited than a truly great wedding reception. Maybe it's the music. Maybe it's the sense of celebration. Maybe it's just that I need a more active social life.
Regardless, a great wedding reception will have me smiling ear to end from the first song until the last and few moved me more in 2022 than Bryan and Polly's reception at the Barn at Wight Farm back in October.
Why did I love Bryan and Polly's reception so much? Easy. It was the party of the year. Want to see why I feel that way? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

Everyone dreams of their wedding being a perfect day but the reality is, there's no such thing as perfect. This is especially true when Mother Nature has other plans for your big day than a beautiful, warm, sunny afternoon.
How you respond to these challenges is often the difference between a good and a great wedding and, for Chrissy and Brandon, it's the reason why even a day full of rain and clouds was still a day worth remembering as the day of their dreams. I love big, showy weddings that feel like an event. But, every once in a while, it's nice to have a beautiful reminder of how that's simply not for everyone.
In the case of Kaitlyn and Mathew, whose September wedding at Allen Hill Farm was one of my most intimate weddings of 2022, less was indeed more.
Kaitlyn and Mathew kept their wedding day more focused on their love than any pomp and circumstance and yet, somehow, there were still dozens of big moments to love. Want to see what I mean? Check them out here.

If you're around a bride and groom long enough on their wedding day, chances are you're going to see a wide range of emotions.
From anxiety and nerves to excitement and celebration, there's no day quite like a wedding day and few couples exhibited this full spectrum of human feelings quite like Nicole and Zachary did during their September wedding day in Fall River.
Looking back, I can't say I blame them because this was one wedding day FULL of magical moments. Want to see what I mean? Check it out here.

There's always a moment during every wedding reception where I know we're about to find out exactly what kind of night it is going to be and for Kirsten and Nicholas, who were married back in September at Independence Harbor, that moment was their bride and groom introductions.
Coming down the aisle, quite literally, to WWE wrestler Bobby Roode's theme song "Glorious" let everyone in attendance know this was not a night that would take itself too seriously and would be a ton of fun. And believe me, it lived up to those expectations.

If I had a list of the phrases I said most as a wedding photographer, I think telling couples that I want them to have a "real wedding that shows who you really are" would be toward the top of the list.
It would also be hard for me to illustrate this point better than with Victoria and Daniel's September wedding at Quidnessett Country Club.
Of all the weddings I had in 2022, few felt more authentic to the couple than Victoria and Daniel's did as their wedding was an equal mix of sweet, senimental and silly. Why? See it for yourself by clicking here.

I try not to play favorites when I think back on a wedding season and try to figure out what photo I want to use as the marquee image of all my marketing for the next year but, at the end of 2022, there was no doubt that photo came from Jesslyn and John's big day at Harbor Lights in Warwick, Rhode Island.
Why do I feel this way? Because not only were they an amazing couple with an amazing wedding day but we lucked out for one of the most beautiful sunset portrait sessions I've ever shot. Don't believe me? See it for yourself by clicking here.

If there's one thing the last few years of wedding photography have taught me, it's that I truly love a good backyard wedding. Maybe more than any other venue, a proper wedding at someone's home, and a reception under a tent, is just the right amount of low key to match my vibe and photography style.
But few of my couples have ever nailed it quite as right as Tesa and Richard, whose September wedding was one of the most beautiful, chill, emotional and downright fun weddings I shot in all of 2022. Why do I feel that way? See for yourself by clicking here.
Granite Links Golf Club, Quincy, Massachusetts

One of the reasons I continue to find wedding photography a creative challenge is every now and again a wedding day comes your way that keeps you on your toes.
Katie and Michael's September wedding at Granite Links Golf Club was that way for me and I mean that in the best way. Whether it was a crazy busy bridal prep period, blinding sunshine during the ceremony or a rush to finish formals before sunset, this was one wedding where there was no slowing down. And I loved every minute of it. Why? See for yourself by clicking here.

No matter how many weddings I shoot, I try hard not to forget why I'm there: To capture amazing moments for a bride and groom but, also, to have fun.
Luckily, there are some couples whose wedding days simply could not go any differently.
Ashley and Joel were one of those and their September nuptials at Rachel's Lakeside were a constant exercise in laughing and joking around. And I mean that in the best way possible.

One of the biggest worries I get from couples looking to book me on their wedding day is this idea that they don't want me to "miss a moment."
Few have gone to the lengths Jennifer and Dominic did. however, as they, literally booked me from the start of their day until the end. Considering how eventful and amazing their wedding was, I can't say I blame them.
Jen and Domenic's wedding day was one of the most complete I've ever photographed and if you want to see what it means to truly not miss a moment of a wedding, check it out for yourself by clicking here.

Part of the beauty of second shooting is you get to show up, shoot a wedding and head out without having to do too much outside of the actual wedding day.
The drawback is, often, you don't make the same kind of connections with a bride and groom. Luckily, it didn't take me long to feel like I knew Dawn and Paul on the afternoon of their September wedding.
Within moments of arriving, Paul felt like a long-lost friend and both he and his groomsmen set the tone for a super fun day where I felt right at home. Want to see why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

I can usually tell a few minutes into an engagement session how comfortable a bride and groom are going to be during our time together but, every now and again, I know before I even take the first photo.
Case in point: Elizabeth and Arthur's November engagement session at Union Station Brewery in Providence. I didn't need a ton of time to figure out how casual and relaxed this pair would be. The fun beer-themed shirts they brought told me everything I needed to know and, suffice to say, it was a session that just got better and better as we went along.

There are few things that will get me excited quite the way working with an oddball couple does so you can imagine the joy on my face when I showed up to Rachel and Mitchell's October engagement session and saw that they brought plastic pumpkin heads to wear on their heads for some of their photos.
Suffice to say, the minute I saw that, I knew this session would be a memorable one and, yet, somehow Rachel and Mitchell kept exceeding my expectations both for fun and great photos. Why? Let's just say we set Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

I love fall in New England. Mostly because it almost doesn't matter where you look, you can find the beauty of the season everywhere.
That was certainly the case on the October afternoon of Kayleigh and Matthew's engagement session at Roger Williams Park.
No matter where we went, and no matter where we looked, everything was simply stunning and when you're working with a couple as fun and flexible as these two? Well, let's just say we set quite a high bar for their fall 2023 wedding photos.

There are a lot of moments I love as a wedding photographer but one of the ones that always makes me smile is that moment where it just *clicks* for a bride and groom.
That's the moment you can see two people get over any reservations they have and start to be themselves and, for Jaime and George, that moment came in the middle of their engagement session when they realized they could tell me exactly what they liked in terms of poses. And the results? Well, there's a reason this was one of my favorite engagement sessions this fall.

There are a lot of things to love about being a wedding photographer but one of my favorite is meeting an awesome couple you just click with right away and seeing how things develop as you get to know them better.
That's why I was so excited to work with Gianna and Nick on the morning of their October engagement session. I had a hunch these two would be one of the most fun couples I worked with this year and I was right. Want to see why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

I've long contended that one of the hardest parts of shooting engagement sessions is finding a way to break the ice with your bride and groom.
That's part of the reason I made it my mission during Ashli and Cole's October engagement session at Colt State Park to make the groom break out in a big smile as he initially was pretty hesitant.
It took just three minutes and, immediately, I knew we were set for a great session. Somehow, though, it just got better and better with every photo. Want to see why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

I only have one rule for my clients during their engagement sessions: Be yourself.
You might think it's a simple rule but, honestly, it's one of the toughest challenges as so many people feel they have to put on some sort of image for their first real professional photo session. But Lindsay and Joe? Man, that was never an issue.
I knew the minute Joe showed up wearing a full brim cowboy hat that we were in for a fun time and he didn't disappoint as Lindsay and Joe had a great session you should see for yourself by clicking here.

One of the reasons I love engagement sessions is getting to see the way a bride and groom interact with each other and seeing if I can bring their relationship out in the photos we take.
In the case of Emily and Jacob, I didn't have to try very hard as it was written all over their faces.
Emily and Jacob chose had their engagement photos taken back in October at Goddard Park and it was one of my favorite sessions this year for a variety of reasons but, mainly, because of how comfortable everything was. See why for yourself by clicking here.

I tell every couples whose engagement photos I shoot that the purpose of these sessions is to get, maybe, two or three photos they can use for Save the Dates but, otherwise, to get to know them as people before their wedding day.
Never have I learned more than about two people than during Shyann and Joshua's September engagement photo session at Goddard Park.
What did I learn? Well, for one thing, this couple is a lot of fun. For another, they are absolute goof balls. And that's why I enjoyed this session so very, very much.

I am SOOOOO not a morning person. So you'll forgive me, then, if I semi-sort of dread any photo sessions that take place prior to noon.
Thankfully, in my experience, my reluctance to get out of bed at a reasonable time is quickly forgotten once I start taking photos and in the case of Kimberly and Ray's engagement session, it was pretty apparent to me pretty quickly that there was nowhere else I'd rather be. They were that fun.

Of all the pieces of advice I offer to my brides and grooms each year, I think the single most important one is "Just be yourself."
It's a message that can get lost in the fog of wedding planning but it's one that I think can make or break your day and couples like Kristen and Gerard show why.
Kristen and Gerard were married back in September at a private residence in North Providence, Rhode Island and their backyard wedding day was the definition of "them." And it was a blast. Want to know why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

One of my favorite things to see is a bride or groom who "hates having their photos taken" turn into a bride or groom who LOVES having their photo taken.
I'd love to say this is something I bring out in people but, in truth, it's just something that happens when a bride or groom is over-the-top happy on their wedding day and that was the case for Michelle and Raymond.
Michelle and Ray had the very definition of a rustic New England wedding and there were so many reasons to laugh and smile. Want to know why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

There are a lot of reasons why I love wedding photography but one of the most underrated ones is getting to see in other couples what you have in your own life.
I think that's partly why I had so much fun working with Marlana and Christopher on the day of their August wedding as their back-and-forth ribbing of each other and playful banter reminded me a TON of my own relationship and their wedding felt, in many ways, like an event my own family would have. In 12 years of photographing weddings and engagement sessions, I can count on one hand the number of times I was on a shoot and a sunset was so beautiful it literally stopped me in my tracks.
But I don't know if any can compare to the one I was treated to on the day of Victoria and Patrick's engagement session back in August.
You know a sunset is special when even the couple you're working with can't stop looking at it and to say it made Victoria and Patrick's session one I won't soon forget is an understatement. See why for yourself here.

There's a fine line to walk between planning the wedding of your dreams and sticking close enough to the standard beats of a wedding day that your guests enjoy themselves too.
I think that's why Matt and Stacie's August wedding at the Holiday Hill Day Camp & Recreation Center in Mansfield Center, Connecticut was so special.

If I had to describe my idea of a perfect wedding day, it's one that should make you laugh, make you cry and ... well, make you shake your head in disbelief over how your guests act once the party starts.
Oh. Did I say I'd describe the perfect wedding day? I guess what I meant was I'd describe Nicole and Dennis' August wedding at Crystal Lake Golf Club.

I'm a big proponent on the idea that where you get married should fit who you are and I don't know if I've seen a couple this year that made a more fitting choice for a venue than Kelsey and Mike.
Kelsey and Mike were married at the Guild in Pawtucket back in August and this low key brewery was the perfect setting for their casual, laid back party that just so happened to also feature a wedding.

Engagement sessions are a great chance to get to know a bride and groom and anytime you're working with a couple coming into your area from out of state, it's especially important to understand the location you're taking them for photos.
That's why Catie, John and I chose Newport for their August engagement session. While I didn't know EXACTLY where we would go, I knew there was enough to do in the City by the Sea that we could give them the authentic Rhode Island engagement session feel and I think we definitely did. I'm always fascinated with how a bride and groom first meet and few couples I've worked with have a more unlikely story than Tessa and Tom, who met while serving in the Coast Guard together.
The first time the pair told me their story, they laughed because Tom was Tessa's boss at the time but on their wedding day, you could see that their love went so far beyond a job title by the way they looked at each other and held one another in their arms.

Weddings are stressful events and, while it might seem like an easy thought to have, being able to laugh and joke around on the day you get married is a rare trait.
That's why I loved Megan and Louis' July wedding at Crystal Lake Golf Club so much. These two absolute sweethearts never let the stress of their day overwhelm them and, more importantly, stayed true to themselves even during one of their lives' most important moments.
And the photos? They reflected that. Want to see why? Check them out for yourself here.

Second shooting as a wedding photographer can be a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, you have a lot more creative freedom when you're a second shooter. On the other, you don't get to spend as much time with a bride and groom as you would have otherwise.
For me, the purest sign that I had a great day as a second shooter is when I don't want the party to end and, for Alysia and Anthony's July wedding at Independence Harbor, that's exactly what happened.

Like many adults my age, I have an affinity for the magic of Disney. Look, I grew up with it.
But, as a wedding photographer, that love runs even deeper because I know whenever I encounter a bride and groom that incorporates Disney into their special day that they're a fun couple that believes in fairy tales and happy ever after.
Few couples have proven that statement more than Jamie and Scott and you can see why their Disney-themed wedding really was a dream come true by checking it out for yourself here.

At its core, wedding photography is a game of patience.
In my case for Ida and Justin's July wedding date, that meant checking every couple of minutes if the sun would FINALLY let up enough for us to shoot some bride and groom portraits.
It took a while but it finally did some 20 minutes before sunset on that July afternoon and, boy, was it worth the wait. See why I loved Justin and Ida's portraits, and their wedding day as a whole by checking it out for yourself here.

At their core, weddings are supposed to be fun and, as much as I try to remind my couples of this, most of them get caught up in the stress and seriousness of the day and forget to just relax and enjoy themselves.
Not Emily and Josh, though. These two, who were married back in July at Coachmen's Lodge in Bellingham, Massachusetts had a wedding day that was, from start to finish, one of the most fun I've ever seen.

It never ceases to amaze me that even now, 12 years after I photographed my first wedding, I'm still discovering new venues I've never been to before that are so beautiful they blow my mind.
For Marissa and David's wedding back in June, this meant by first-ever trip to Avenir in Walpole, Massachusetts and, I've got to be honest, it was well worth the wait.
Marissa and David had an absolutely gorgeous wedding day and it was only partly because of the location they chose. See it for yourself by clicking here.

It's cliche but you can really tell a lot about a couple by the first impression you get when you meet them.
When I met Amanda and Michael after a bridal expo back in January, I knew right away they were my kind of people and their backyard wedding at the bride's mother's house was going to be fun.
What I didn't know is just how much fun it would be but when I headed out TWO HOURS into the four hours they set aside for dancing, and they were still going, I knew this would be a wedding I wouldn't soon forget. See why for yourself by clicking here.
