THE STORY BEHIND THE STORIES

- YET ANOTHER PHOTOGRAPHY BLOG -

Have you ever had a moment where something funny or unpredictable happened and you thought to yourself "Man, I'm going to remember that for a long time?" As a Rhode Island wedding photographer, I have more of these moments every year than I could even imagine trying to count.

Weddings are the ultimate thrill ride for me. A once-in-a-lifetime day full of special moments and memories that I know my brides and grooms will cherish for a lifetime. With that typically comes a timeline full of things to do, a unrelenting stress for everything to go perfect and, eventually, enough alcohol to wipe away any inhibitions if things don't go exactly how you envisioned them.

Back in the fall of 2014, when I was just starting my career as a wedding photographer, I thought it would be a good idea to do what everyone on the internet was doing back then: write a blog. The problem, I would discover, was I had nothing of note to say. So I did what any good photographer does: Let the photos speak for themselves.

It took me a while to find my voice as a blog writer but I'm so glad I did as I genuinely believe my blog writing has become a key part of documenting a wedding for my couples. These are the inside stories behind the stories of the wedding days that I will remember for the rest of my life.

Whether you're planning your own wedding or you just like looking at cool wedding photos and finding out more behind them, I hope you genuinely enjoy these articles. Going forward I will continue writing separate blog entries for each wedding and engagement session I shot and, soon, I will start adding some exciting wedding-related articles I hope help brides and grooms in their quest to plan the perfect day.

For now, though, enjoy a stroll back through my favorite stories and images of recent assignments and, as always, thanks for reading.

I have a pretty simple rule when it comes to the music at a wedding reception: If I see a live band, I know we're in for one heck of a party.

Melissa and Patrick proved this theory to me once again as their December wedding day was FULL of amazing moments on and off the dance floor.

But I've expect nothing less as this couple are amazing in so many ways on their own.

Whether it was a sweet first look, some well-timed bride and groom portraits in the cold or their sweet and touching ceremony, this is one day worth checking out.

Whenever I'm driving home from shooting a wedding, I can't help but think about the one moment above all that defined the day for the bride and groom.

For Catherine and Sean, that moment when they asked their guests to leave the Kirkbrae Country Club ballroom and took the dance floor by themselves for one last song.

It was a storybook ending to a beautiful wedding day but it was just one moment on a day full of memories and you can check out some of the rest of this, one of my favorite weddings of 2021, by clicking here.

As much as I enjoy fall weddings in New England, I always find myself a bit worried when the calendar turns to mid November.

You never quite know what you're in for over the last six or so weeks of a given year so when Allison and Joe told me they were getting married by the water toward the end of November, I panicked a bit inside.

Luckily, my worries of a wintery, cold, outdoor wedding were overblown as Allison and Joe had a beautiful, warmer-than-expected ceremony that was absolutely perfect for them. WhyCheck it out here.

Anytime I book an engagement session past the first week of November or so, I'm always worried the fall colors won't stick around long enough to make the session as good as it can be.

Luckily, that wasn't the case with Jen and Domenic during their mid-November session at Goddard Park as we got one of the last good days for fall foliage.

And thank goodness we did as this couple was super easygoing and relaxed the entire time we were together. Perhaps that's why I loved their photos so much so be sure to check them out by clicking here.

One of my favorite parts of being a wedding photographer is that, at some point during a wedding day, the people you're working with forget you're there.

That's when I get to see how they act in real life and, most times, it's beautiful and sweet. For Amelia and Giuliana, who said "I do" back in November at Newport Vineyards, it was also apparently very, very funny.

Amelia and Giuliana are an amazing couple who compliment each other so well and their wedding day was one FULL of smiling, laughing and beautiful moments. Want to see why? Check it out here.

One of the best reasons a couple should plan an engagement session is to really get to know their wedding photographer and how they act in a real-world environment. But it works both ways, really.

When I got the chance to work with Michael and Katie back in October, I had no idea who they were outside of one casual consultation five days earlier.

Within two hours, they went from total strangers to a couple who I loved working with and could totally envision their upcoming 2022 wedding. And the result? A beautiful fall session definitely worth checking out.

There are a lot of reasons why I got into wedding photography but the main thing that KEEPS me in wedding photographer is finding really fun couples that I can be myself around .

I knew within minutes of meeting Elizabeth and Spencer that they were the exact kind of couple and were planning the exact kind of wedding I love to shoot.

What kind of wedding is that? A beautiful and romantic wedding that never takes itself too seriously. Oh ... and one that is awkward. In the best way possible. Want to see what I mean? Check it out here.

If you told me I could choose one specific venue, on one specific day, to shoot a wedding every year, I wouldn't blink an eye and I'd say "Give me Crystal Lake Golf Club on a Saturday in the middle of October."

Why? Because nothing says "Fall in New England" better than that. Especially with a couple as amazing as Nicole and Sherry, who were married on, quite possibly, the most beautiful day of the fall season.

I'm so glad it was them I got to photograph on this beautiful day because they took full advantage of the weather in every way. How? Check it out here.

I tell every couple I work with that the first 10-15 minutes of a photoshoot are always going to be awkward and, for the most part, it is. But I didn't need that awkward period for Ashley and Joel during their October engagement session ... and not just because I photographed a family portrait session with them two days early.

No, photographing Ashley and Joel would have been easy whether it was our first of fifth time working together. Why? Because they're awesome. Check out why I feel that way by clicking here.

There really is no better time to live in Rhode Island than the fall. It is hard to imagine something more beautiful than the foliage once the colors start to turn.

Unless, of course, you're ALSO capturing an amazing love story like Jessica and Phillip's.

What was so special about these two and their October engagement session? Well, we were taking their photos at the place Phillip told Jessica he loved her. And it was the place where he proposed. And the weather and fall colors? Absolutely perfection. Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

I have a special place in my heart for brides and grooms who eschew traditional elements of a wedding so when I first met Matt & Shay and saw their colorful hair and learned the bride planned to wear a black wedding dress down the aisle, I knew right away they were the couple for me.

I'm just a big fan of staying true to yourself and Matt and Shay sure did that. So much so that I knew before their ceremony even started that this would be one of my favorite weddings of the year. And it sure was.

It's hard to boil Kerri and Jesse's October wedding at Plymouth Country Club down into one moment but, if I had to, that moment would be when the DJ hit the wayback machine to 1981 and tossed on "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield.

The song might be a little cheesy, and maybe not the best track for a wedding, but it was the perfect ballad for this party as Kerri waited a lifetime to become Jesse's girl and, on this beautiful night, it was well worth the wait.

I'm a big believer in the power of a still photo. When done right, capturing a moment in time in one single frame can tell a story better than video ever could.

Because of this, I absolutely adore when I catch my brides and grooms in full fledged, uproarious laughter on their wedding days. And few couples I've ever worked with laughed more than Tom and Meaghan.

Tom and Meaghan's October wedding was one of the most emotional, fun and, well, perfect weddings I ever had the pleasure of photographing. Want to see why? Check it out by clicking here.

When a downpour started 20 minutes before Chelsea and Brandon were supposed to get married back in September, I was so incredibly disappointed because I wanted this day to be perfect.

What I didn't realize was it already was because, in that moment, all that mattered for Chelsea and Brandon was that they were about to become husband and wife.

I shouldn't have been surprised but I was and that little moment said so much about this bride and groom and their beautiful wedding day, which was easily one of my favorite ever. Why? Check it out by clicking here.

Whenever I'm booked to shoot a wedding in Newport, Rhode Island, I'm always a little bit worried about what kind of day to expect as I'm not the type of person who fits the "Newport wedding" vibe.

Thankfully, I knew within moments of meeting Ariana and Mark on the afternoon of their September wedding at OceanCliff that this wouldn't a stuffy day. Not at all.

Mark and Ariana were the type of people you can share a laugh with and, boy, did we ever. There's a reason why their wedding was one of my favorites this year and you can see why for yourself by clicking here.

As a photographer, it's hard to admit when things don't turn out the way you want them to. But, sometimes, it's the most important thing you can do.

When Rob, Amanda and I got together back in August for their engagement session at Roger Williams Park, on what was one of the hottest days of the year, I left feeling like we should take another crack at it when it wasn't so warm.

Thankfully, they agreed and, boy, am I glad they did. Want to see why? Check out their engagement photos on a beautiful fall afternoon by clicking here.

One of the only real worries I had entering the 2021 wedding season was whether or not couples who got married in 2020 but held off their big wedding days for the following year would somehow miss out on the big experience of a wedding.

Couples like Brittany and Fredrick remind me that's simply not the case.

A year after Brittany and Fredrick became husband and wife, they held their full wedding on a beautiful fall afternoon at Warwick Country Club and it was so, so worth the wait. Want to see why? Check it out here.

I love a bride and groom that doesn't take itself too seriously and has an element of "winging it" on their wedding day and for Lauren and Ian, who were married back in September at the Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket, that meant leaving it entirely up to their guests where they were going to honeymoon ... and finding out at their reception.

It was a little detail, and a bit of a fun game, but it said so much about this bride and groom, whose wedding was a complete blast to photograph. Why? See for yourself by clicking here.

I've long said same-sex weddings are among my absolute favorite ones to shoot and Katelyn and Lauren's wedding day proved exactly why.

After a beautiful, sunny afternoon full of lighthearted fun and laughter, Katelyn and Lauren had the type of wedding reception you love to see as a wedding photographer. It was full of dancing from start to finish but, more importantly, full of little moments that become memories that a bride, or in this case two brides, will never forget.      There's nothing more concerning as a wedding photographer than a passing storm that looks like it's going to dump rain all over your area minutes before the start of a wedding ceremony. But there's also nothing better than lucking out when that storm passes quick enough that everything can proceed as planned.

Both happened on Kaitlin and Ronald's September wedding day and, thanks to some great planning, this bride and groom still found the perfect way to celebrate their love. Want to see how? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.

I love when a wedding day goes as planned. But you know what I like more? When it's better than even the best of expectations could have predicted.

When Frank and Kelly approached me about shooting their big day, they told me they didn't expect a big party because "their families don't, dance."

Well, I'm not sure who Frank and Kelly invited to their wedding but the guests who were in attendance not only danced but the party was so good, it stole the show. Want to see why? Click here to check it out for yourself.

Every bride and groom I've ever worked with wants to have the "perfect" wedding day but, inevitably, something you couldn't have planned will go wrong.

But for Michael and Ashley, their day was already perfect before it even started.

After all, how can you call an absolute gorgeous, sunny day in Newport, on Labor Day weekend at Belle Mer no less, anything less than perfect?

I adored Michael and Ashley's beautiful wedding day and, if you'd like to see why I call it perfect, check it out for yourself by clicking here.

As a wedding photographer, the toughest part of my day is the formal photo portion of a bride and groom's timeline. That's why I was initially worried about the THREE HOUR window I had for formals for Matthew and Christine's wedding back in August.

Nine times out of ten, that kind of window is a disaster for a wedding day. But not this time.

Thankfully, not only were my worries unfounded but Matthew and Christine's formal photos were some of my favorite of the entire year. Want to see why? Click here to check out their entire day for yourself.

Whenever I second shoot a wedding, I'm always worried about what type of couple I am going to end up working with. Unlike my own business, I don't meet the brides and grooms whose weddings I photograph as a second photographer so i never know until the day of if they're my type of people or not.

I knew minutes into Aleksey and Leda's day, though, that we'd get along quite well. What I didn't know is it would be one of my favorite second shooter assignments of the year. Why was it so great? Well, check it out for yourself by clicking here.

I've been to a lot of beautiful wedding venues in my time as a photographer but few, if any, leave me feeling the way Belle Mer does in Newport, Rhode Island.

Belle Mer is, quite simply, a stunning location and I know the couples lucky enough to say "I do" there are in for a special day but, even so, Chris and Courtney managed to exceed even my highest of hopes.

Even though the two were married on one of the hottest days of the year, it's hard for me to say their wedding was anything other than super cool. Why? Well, see it for yourself by clicking here.

There's a fine line you have to walk as a wedding photographer between calming a bride or groom down before their wedding ceremony and letting them live in the emotions of the day in their own way.

I always love when a bride or groom gets emotion but few made me smile as much as Lori did on the day she said "I do" to Marcy-Gale.

After trying to keep herself busy in the hours leading up to the ceremony, you could see when the reality of the situation hit Lori and it was beautiful. Why? Check out their wedding for yourself by clicking here.

No matter how much you prepare, sometimes good wedding photography is a matter of luck.

This is especially true when it comes to weather and, for Luke and Ann's July wedding day at Newport Vineyards in Middletown, Rhode Island, I was convinced we were out of luck when it came to outdoor portraits. Then a funny thing happened: the skies cleared right after they said "I do."

Luke and Ann's wedding day might be the luckiest one I've seen this year so far and if you'd like to know why, check it out for yourself by clicking here.

As a wedding photographer, sometimes the hardest lesson to understand is that not everyone is as excited to pose for photos as you are to take them.

That's why when second shooting Quinn and James' June wedding, my only goal for the camera-shy groom was to capture a couple of bride and groom portraits I knew they'd love that really told the story of their day.

Not only did we do that but, thankfully, the portraits were just the icing on the cake as Quinn and James' wedding was full of great moments that told their story perfectly. See what I mean for yourself by clicking here.

The hardest part of being a second photographer for a wedding day is breaking the ice with a bride and groom you've never met before.

Thankfully, I've been fortunate enough to work with some amazing couples who I just click with right from the start and Aaron and Jenna-Lee are one of the best examples of this.

There are a lot of perks to being a wedding photographer but one of the most unexpected ones, for me anyway, is the way you can often experience new cultures you previously knew nothing about.

When Maria and Daniel were married back in June in Boston, I had no idea what to expect from their Russian Orthodox wedding but I learned, quite quickly, that there was so much to love about this tradition rich culture and it was, easily, one of my favorite ceremonies ever.      About two years ago, when I photographed Brittany and Giovanni's engagement session at Colt State Park in Bristol, I made sure to comment how I loved this couple because they were so flexible and patient.

But I had no idea how key those qualities would be on their wedding day.

After a beautiful ceremony at St. Rocco's Rectory, Brittany and Gio had their reception at Warwick Country Club on what might have been the hottest day of the day. But that didn't stop us one bit and you can see why their patience made the day so great by clicking here.

I'm just being honest. Few things disappoint me more than bad weather on a couple's big day. But that's why I have a special place in my heart for brides and grooms who refuse to let Mother Nature rain, literally, on their parade.

Kristen and Michael are an example of why I will always love these types of couples as the pair didn't sulk once on the way down the aisle for their rainy Memorial Day weekend wedding. In fact, I don't think any kind of weather could have ruined this day. See why I loved this wedding for yourself by clicking here.

There are certain moments that define a wedding day and one of the biggest ones is when a groom sees a bride for the first time. I've shot a LOT of weddings in my day but few of those big reveal moments were more touching or beautiful than Daniel's was when he saw Clarissa walk down the aisle back in August.

Dan's reaction was so emotional that I thought, for a moment, he was joking. But he wasn't and I can't blame him for wiping away a tear because this was a day full of tears. The best and happiest ones. Why? Check it out for yourself by clicking here.
